Singlemalting #241 – 6th Edition Scotch Whisky Advent Calendar Day 15 – Lossit Archivist

G’day whisky pilgrims and welcome to another glorious day to discover new and delicious whisky flavors.

Today we ante up a little on the Lost Distillery company with one from their Archivist range that typically include whiskies that are pushing into and beyond the 20 year old range.

The Lossit distillery was operating on Islay between 1817 and 1867. You can get a thorough grounding in the history and story of Lossit at the Lost Distillery Website (note that their website is being rehashed right now so you may need to come back and read all the detail of this distillery). We had the Lossit Classic as part of our 4th edition calendar so lets see how much more complex this much older version is.

Lost Distillery Company Lossit Archivist – Islay – 46%abv – no colour and no chill filtration.

Colour:    Very pale gold and makes me lean towards only American oak influence on this one.

Nose:         True to it’s Islay roots there is certainly some brine, earth and damp wood with a touch of fireplace soot. Some fruit here as well, poached Fuji apples.

Palate:        Salt and Vinegar Mrs Vickies chips but with a whole lot more going on. The sooty element is there and is a bit like sitting in an old car and flipping open one of those metal ash trays for passengers in the back seat. A combination of old panelling, ash and carpet but in a good way. Reminds me a bit of driving in my grandfathers car. The Fuji apple peeks through but for me the palate seems more about the darker side of Islay than the fruity side.

Finish:       The 46% holds its own and helps deliver a nice long finish. Touch of zesty acid quality that takes me back to the apple and malt vinegar. Still salty but not overpowering. Would love to sit down and watch a movie while sipping this dram. If I was around when Lossit was distilling I think a nice quiet corner in an Islay pub with a tipple of their Single Malt would have been heavenly.

On this day in our 5th edition we had the Secret Spirits Caol Ila 8 Year Old that came to be known as Smoldering Secrets on our 700ml bottles. There are still just a few of them available.

Singlemalting #240 – 6th Edition Scotch Whisky Advent Calendar Day 14 – Miltonduff 10

Welcome to the end of the 2nd week of this 6th edition adventure. Miltonduff has been showcased a number of times in past editions. Once alone as an older Samaroli bottling and a once as part of a particularly amazing Samaroli blended malt.

Built on the site of the meal mill (this building on meal mill sites apparently happened quite a bit) of the Pluscarden Abbey that was build in 1236. It is owned by Pernod Ricard making up much of their Chivas and Ballentines blends. One of those seldom seen Single Malts that requires some independent bottling to do the rescuing. The distillery is built on some of those original foundation stones from 1236.

Miltonduff Distillery

A.D. Rattray Miltonduff 10 Year Old – Speyside – Bourbon Barrel # 701221 – 60.9% abv

Colour:       Very typical of american oak and probably lends itself to a potential 2nd fill Bourbon rather than 1st fill. Pale gold.

Nose:           Miltonduff is such a gentle flavor profile. At least the Samaroli offerings were. This is quite delicate even at over 60%. If you get right in to the Glencairn with the nosing the alcohol can finally jump up and make itself known. Those crisp vanilla wafers with layers of vanilla cream filling. Grab two of those and shove them into a bowl of vanilla bean ice cream that nestles a fresh banana. Put all that together and you have a banana split. Hold the hot fudge because so far its not here…… maybe a slight drizzle of caramel instead.

Palate:         Top your banana split with a marachino cherry. Super creamy mouth filling action with the 60.9%. This is delicious.

Finish:          Warming all the way down. The wafer and vanilla is still there. Touches of citrus rolling in at the death. Didn’t need water for me but would be interesting to see what extra might show itself. Go for it, thats what cask strength is for.

Singlemalting #239 – 6th Edition Scotch Whisky Advent Calendar Day 13 – Arran 21 Year Old

Another first for any of our editions today we present a 21 year old single cask of Arran bottled by Douglas Laing. I have been looking forward to this one as I have had some truly delicious Arran expressions over the years but few of this age.

Arran distillery was founded in 1994 by the former director of Chivas Harold Currie. There were at one time more than a dozen mostly illicit stills operating on Arran. In 2019 the Lagg distillery also owned by Arran was opened at the South end of the Isle of Arran and begining distilling in April. This 21 year old expression was distilled only a few years after the distillery began production and is a rare cask indeed.

Douglas Laing Old Particular Arran 21 Year Old Distilled in 1996 – Islands – Refill Bourbon Barrel # 12357 – 52% abv

Colour:         Pale straw. Real signs of the refill Bourbon cask that has had very little impact on the colour after 21 long years. Amazing.

Nose:            I was very excited for this as I love what a refill cask does for whisky when it’s aged for a long time. I was expecting a lot of fresh notes and boy did this deliver. Delicate, delicate, delicate. This is absolutely right up my alley. Most of you know that I love drams that exhibit delicate complexities that I have to spend time to coax out of the glass. Morning glory and honeysuckle. Lychee in syrup. Werther’s original caramels.

Palate:           Oh so soft and velvety on the palate. Orange creams, tinned pineapple, King Island cream. My wife Cindy got raspberry pop rocks (you need to be our age to remember those).

Finish:         A building warmth the more sips I take. The flavors linger all the way down and seem to overtake my entire core. The fruits just linger on and on and are a true testament to the gentle nature of this cask. There are almost no woody or oaky notes here. The creamy orange citrus and that tiny piece of tinned pinapple is the last note for me.

What a treat to have such an old Arran. Rare as hen’s teeth these casks. Thanks so much Douglas Laing for parting with this and making our adventure this year just a little more fun.

On this day in our 5th edition we had the truly amazing Auchinderom Peated that is still available in very limited quantities from Secret Spirits. Hope that we kept up the tradition of the lucky 13 with this delicious Arran.

Singlemalting #238 – 6th Edition Scotch Whisky Advent Calendar Day 12 Wemyss Malts Lord Elcho

Today we have the sole Blended Scotch Whisky in the 6th edition Scotch Whisky Advent Calendar. Coming from those able folk at Wemyss Malts the Lord Elcho is their only Blended Scotch brand.

Some of you may remember all the way back to the 1st Edition and the 15 Year Old Lord Elcho that was found on day 10. This particular edition is the little brother to that dram at a more entry level pricepoint but the same percentage of Single Grain to Single Malt 60% to 40%. That is a very high percentage of malt for such an inexpensive blend.

As a throwback to that 1st edition here is a snippet of info about Lord Elcho and why he is front and center on the Wemyss Blend.

Lord Elcho, 1721-1787, was the eldest son of the 5th Earl of Wemyss, one of the current company owners’ ancestors. Courageous and loyal, Lord Elcho was the commander of Bonnie Prince Charlie’s army. After the Jacobites’ defeat at the battle of Culloden in 1746, Elcho was exiled to France – never to return to his native Scotland.

Lord Elcho Blended Scotch Whisky

Wemyss Malts Lord Elcho Blended Scotch Whisky – NAS – 40% abv

Colour:        Light Gold. Even though this is youngish whisky Wemyss do not colour it like so many inexpensive blends.

Nose:            Very fresh, apples, pears, hints of malt, certainly a young nose but very pleasant.

Palate:           Candy apple. Like a green granny smith with the sticky red toffee coating. Bing, that it 100% what this whisky is saying to my palate. Nice and light. A very easy drinking dram with enough sweetness and a touch of crisp fruit to carry it all along.

Finish:        Longer than I was expecting with a tingle of oaky spice at the end.

A delicious little blended Scotch that shows well with the high malt content. Without the mass quantities of blended Scotches sold around the world we would not be able to find any delicious single and blended malts on any shelves.

It will be really interesting to see how all the blind tasting goes today with the boys in NZ and Foodquig. Can they pick the blended Scotch?

Singlemalting #237 – 6th Edition Scotch Whisky Advent Calendar Day 11 Dufftown 11 Year Old

Welcome back everyone to day 11 and an accidental revealing of an 11 year old whisky. Sometimes these things just happen. Today we visit yet another distillery that is a first timer for any of our whisky adventures. We had never been able to find a Dufftown bottled by one of the many independent bottlers we have worked with so we just had to do it ourselves.

Dufftown is home to 9 distilleries and raises more revenue per capita than any other town in the UK. The Dufftown distillery itself has been around since 1895 and was founded by two gentlemen from Liverpool. A former meal mill Dufftown started out with only 2 stills. Owned today by powerhouse Diageo Dufftown is most recognizable by it’s proprietary whisky “Singleton”.

When I initially saw this Dufftown on the list of casks that I could taste from I was pretty excited. You all know I love to cross a distillery off the list but I also love trying rare to find casks from distilleries owned by the big companies.

Secret Spirits – Dufftown 11 Year Old – Speyside – Oloroso Sherry Cask # 700435A – 55.4% abv

Colour:       Burnished Bronze.

Nose:           After yesterday’s Big Peat this is a polar opposite trip North to Speyside. Lovely deep dark forest fruits. The dominant berry for me is blueberry. Like a lovely rich blueberry compote warming on the stove. I could easily have this on pancakes. Does that make this a breakfast whisky? I sure hope so.

Palate:        Big sherry influence here, figs and dates, winter spices, Oloroso sweetness in spades. Funnily enough the Oloroso comes across much dryer than I remember from my tasting in Scotland.

Finish:       Lovely dry finish that continues to put out layers of rich fruit and spice notes. Very mouth coating and at 55.4% pretty balanced. Was tempted to try a touch of water but am enjoying it as is. All of our intrepid Youtubers have been doing a thorough job of adding water and delving deep into the nuance of every whisky so be sure to check them out.

There may be even at 11 years old just a touch more sherry influence on this whisky than some would want to see but is it ever delicious. There is often several schools of thought about how much sherry cask maturation is the right amount. Some want dark inky whisky that is so sherried that there is little else remaining. Others like just a hint to offset the distillery style. As always I tend to be all over the place and can just enjoy the difference inherant in each different whisky I try.

On this day in the 5th edition we had a blended malt both vibrant and aptly named Wemyss Malts Vanilla Burst.

Singlemalting #236 – 6th Edition Scotch Whisky Advent Calendar Day 10 Big Peat

G’day all of you peat heads out there. Sorry for the delay this year in getting around to some serious peat. With all of the sherry votes we had this year we just had to make sure that we were off to a very sherried Christmas.

The peat votes also had a win and we promise that there are one or two more peated expressions in the 6th edition than there have been in the past. Good things come to them that wait I guess.

So today we are back with Douglas Laing and their well known Big Peat brand. Funny story here in that this was supposed to be the limited release cask strength Christmas edition of the Big Peat but some wires got crossed at the warehouse and we got the 46% edition instead. Whoops. By the time the mistake was caught it was too late and so here we are. Delicious anyway but wow that Christmas cask strength Big Peat was pretty special.

All of the single malts contained in this skillful blend are from Islay and this was the first of Douglas Laing’s regional brands. We have already had the Scallywag earlier this edition. Can anyone name the other of the trio?

Douglas Laing’s Big Peat

Douglas Laing Big Peat Blended Malt Scotch Whisky – Islay – Bourbon Casks – 46% abv

Colour:          Very light and now the front runner for the lightest colour this edition so far. Sauvignon Blanc.

Nose:              Baaaad Medicine is what I need……. sorry throwback to the 80’s there. Definite medicinal note along with some latex, pencil shavings, eraser dust, and vegemite. Love these notes and the fact that all of this is fantastic is why Islay whisky is so cool.

Palate:           Whoa ok big medicinal hit with some iodine, burnt rubber, salt, a wisp of smoke here but this is all about what that peat brings to the table.

Finish:          Very warming all the way down and all of the above lingers and coats the palate, throat, tongue, breath. I can even still smell the stuff seeping out of my glencairn from a foot away. It’s like some sort of Islay presence has possessed all my olfactory senses.

This is a really great balanced islay dram for every time the urge hits you that nothing other than beastly peat with fix. Having not had this until out trip to Scotland in May I can see why this has been such a popular brand for Douglas Laing.

Great blending work again from DL. Phew well hopefully that should hold the peaties for a wee bit.

On day 10 in the 5th edition we had the Secret Spirits Royal Brackla 11 Year Old that is still available in full bottle size.

Singlemalting #235 – 6th Edition Scotch Whisky Advent Calendar Day 9 Orkney 10 Year Old

Welcome to da islands mon…. sorry wrong islands. Welcome to the almost perpetually wet, stormy, brine covered and glorious Scottish isles. Today we head to Orkney to a distillery that most of you know very well. This is again one of those casks where the distillery must not be named from Claxton’s Independent bottlers. Claxton’s are based in England and have built a reputation for bottling exceptional casks in their iconic if not imposing flat and square bottles.

The distillery in question today was founded in 1798 and is in the far North in Kirkwall in the Orkney Island chain. Influenced by repeated Viking raids and eventual settlements the Orkneys have a very unique history as part of Scotland lore.

Not so Mysterious Orkney Distillery

Most expressions from this distillery are lightly peated so it will be interesting to see how this single cask compares to the prorietary bottlings.

Claxton’s Orkney 10 Year Old – Island – Bourbon Hogshead #1836-008A – 63% abv

Colour:          Lighter than anything that has gone before so far this edition. 18k gold.

Nose:             Lovely sweet barbequed, buttered corn on the cobb. Definite influence of some earthy peaty elements but they are wrapped in sweetness. Loving this hogshead influence on this nose. It’s a little on the delicate side which is a really good thing. The more sniff time I spend on it the better it gets. All of this and at 63%. No way in the wide world of sports would I think that this was 63%…….. ever. Great balance on this.

Palate:          Some tropical influence which comes as a bit of a surprise. Not quite ripe pineapple, citrus, but lighter lemony notes. The 63% really does not dominate at all and I find myself barely thinking about the abv or feeling it for that matter.

Finish:        The sweetness and fruit dominate the finish. I am still getting that creamy BBQ influenced sweetness that is somehow transforming itself into a corn on the cobb. This is a really new tasting note for me with Scotch but my brain cannot get past it.

This is a great example of how minimal oak influence can be outstanding in leaving a ton of nuanced flavors that would otherwise be swallowed up. Fantastic dram Claxton’s well done on the cask selection.

Last edition we had the A.D. Rattray Glen Moray 9 Year Old.

Singlemalting #234 – 6th Edition Scotch Whisky Advent Calendar Day 8 Benrinnes 10 Year Old

Another day and another single cask from Secret Spirits.

Today for the first time we enjoy a unique cask from the Benrinnes Distillery in Speyside. The first Scotch Whisky I ever sold was the Stronachie 12. The long lost distillery was recreated after an original bottle was procured by A.D. Rattray from 1904. The distillery that they sourced the whisky as the base for the Stronachie brand was Benrinnes. Always a super enjoyable every day dram Stronachie inspired me to seek out more single casks of Benrinnes and see what flavors could be found.

This particular cask of Benrinnes is a 1st fill Oloroso. You may be picking up on a theme here as we managed to get access to a decent range of Oloroso aged whiskies for this edition and after having the vast majority of you screaming for more sherry how could we resist.

Benrinnes Distillery

Benrinnes was founded in 1826 and unfortunately was destroyed by a flood a mere 3 years later. Rebuilt in 1835 under the name Lyne of Ruthrie. Unfortunately it went bankrupt, was sold again, went through a fire in 1896 and was finally refurbished and converted to electricity and sold to John Dewar & Son in 1922.

Thats a lot for a distillery to go through over it’s lifetime. So happy that it made it through all those challenges and we can taste this cask today.

Secret Spirits Benrinnes 10 Year Old – 1st fill Oloroso # 303872 – Speyside – 56.1% abv

Colour:        Another reddish cue to this one but again not as much as you can see from a 1st fill Oloroso cask.

Nose:           Cadbury Fruit and Nut chocolate block complete with the imbedded raisins. Big time memories of being a kid in Australia and having a stick broken off the block to chow down on while watching a movie with the family. This was pretty much one of our staple treats. Along with this sweetness is some of that old leather and dusty library book nose as well. Ladies and gentlemen shall we take a dram and chocolate in the drawing room?

Palate:          Wow really palate spreading flavor. The alcohol seems absolutely spot on at 56.1%. There is a burst of Grand Marnier Liqueur and all the while that lovely nutty, fruity chocolate just keeps coming.

Finish:         Lovely and warming with cocoa nibs, Terry’s chocolate orange and a zippy dry almost tannic finish that leaves everything watering for another sip.

This is the first time I have ever seen Benrinnes in a 1st fill Oloroso and I’m digging it.

On day 8 in the 5th edition we had the 13 year old Balmenach from Old Malt Cask.

Singlemalting #233 – 6th Edition Scotch Whisky Advent Calendar Day 7 Scallywag

Welcome to the end of the first full week. Cindy and I hope that your whisky adventuring has been fun so far. Today we try something from a very good independent bottler with a long history of exceptional casks and brands. Douglas Laing is a welcome addition to the list of indies that we have featured over the years.

Today much like with Wemyss Malts in the past we are going to explore one of Douglas Laings iconic blended malts, Scallywag.

Including malts from Mortlach, Macallan and Glenrothes, Scallywag is made up entirely of Speyside distilleries. As most of you know I love a good blended malt and we always highlight at least a handful in each edition.

Scallywag Blended Malt from Douglas Laing

Douglas Laing Scallywag Blended Malt Scotch Whisky – 46% abv – Sherry and Bourbon casks – Speyside

Colour:        Rose gold that hints at the sherry casks used in this small batch blended malt.

Nose:            The local tuck shop from my childhood where I would take my hard earned pocket money and buy a mixed bag of lollies (sweets). Musk sticks, fruit jubes, wine gums, and sherbet. Strawberry Chupa Chup.

Palate:        Lovely soft array of sweet fruit and candy begins the journey but allows some earthier elements to climb aboard. A touch of Christmas spice and a bowl of macadamia nuts.

Finish:       A hint of ginger snap spices up the finish. This is just a lovely dram and could happily stay in my glass (with additional pours) for hours.

Yep I love a good blended malt and this is just plain fabulous drinking. Great as an every night dram that won’t break the budget but is a cut above a lot of your usual suspect shelf warmers.

Last edition on day 7 we had another (cough) blended malt (teaspooned cask) from yet another outstanding independent bottler Adelphi. The Breath of Speyside was truly amazing.

Singlemalting #232 – 6th Edition Scotch Whisky Advent Calendar Day 6 Dream to Dram Kingsbarns Single Malt

Welcome to the Lowlands everyone. As promised today is the first time we have ever been able to feature the very first whisky release from a Scottish Distillery. Many of you whisky adventurers that have been through our Scotch Whisky Advent Calendar journies before will recognize the Wemyss Malts name. We certainly have had some epic single casks from them over the years.

All the while they have been quietly aging away their very own Single Malt at the Kingsbarns Distillery near St Andrews in the lowlands. Cindy and I have had the pleasure of visiting the distillery on several occasions and it was really exciting this time around to be able to taste “whisky” and see how far they have come since our visit to see the first distillation run.

Have a look at this wee little interview with Jacqueline Sutherland who is the brand ambassador for Wemyss Malts and Kingsbarns. It was a gorgeous sunny day for this visit and the golf courses in the area were calling but alas no time for recreation, there was great whisky to drink.

Kingsbarns Distillery

Kingsbarns Distillery Dream to Dram Single Malt – Bourbon & Portuguese Wine Barrels # KBL1003/1 – Lowland – 46% abv

Colour:       Very pale straw on this as there is no caramel added and the Bourbon and STR (shaved, toasted and re-charred) wine casks impart just a touch of colour after only around 4 years of influence.

Nose:           Fresh hay and honey, snowdrops (gorgeous white flowers that blanket the forrest floor on the drive up to the distillery) and vanilla pudding.

Palate:       Super fresh and warming at 46%. Vanilla in spades along with more of that fresh hay/grain adding a tiny touch of barn loft in Spring when the doors are thrown open and everything smells fresh and new. Creamy vanilla custard.

Finish:       The fresh vanilla stays with the finish along with some just out of the oven, thick crust sourdough topped with butter and creamed honey.

Fantastic start for this distillery. If you start with a quality wood programme backed up with outstanding distilling and top notch equipment, there is no way you can not make something truly delicious.

I am going to be very excited to try some of the new expressions as time rolls along. It amazes me that Cindy and I were there for the first run off the still and here we are with whisky in our glass. Time marches on so fast it seems even though when you are visiting Scotland the pace of life seems a wee bit more relaxed.

On day 6 in our 5th edition we had the now sadly no longer operating but extremely delicious last offering of the Exclusive Malts Regional Islay Sherry.
